Every year an estimated 5 million older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only what gets reported. Experts believe that for every case that is reported, as many as 23 go unreported.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was launched on June 15, 2006 to provide opportunities for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons.

Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socio-economic groups, cultures, and races.
